MMRDA to construct Skywalk at grant road

June 15, 2009

The design of the skywalk will be constructed at Grant Road by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will almost, tempt you to have it in the showcase of your drawing room.

“Well, if not the drawing room, the skywalk will certainly be the showcase artifact as far as this vibrant city is concerned”, said Lt. Col. Anand Kumar Pahal, the Additional Chief Engineer and the in-charge of the skywalk project being implemented by MMRDA.

“Frankly, it is the functional requirement. There are so many underground utilities at the particular spot that we had to conceptualize something very different”, said Atul Bhobe, Managing Director, SN Bhobe and Associates Pvt. Ltd., specialists in designing civil works.

“Nana Chowk is approached from five different locations – Tardeo, Kemp's Corner, Lamington Road , Girgaum Chowpatty and Opera House. Obviously to avoid any kind of obstruction to the vehicular traffic we had to resort to a signature design. The unique design will also enable devotees to offer prayers and flowers to Ganesha from the skywalk while the deity is being taken towards Chowpatty for immersion”, Bhobe said further.

The 650-meter long and 4-meter wide skywalk – that is round in shape – will hang to a single column structure with High Tensile Steel cables, similar to the type used for the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The eight escalators that will be provided to this 45-crore skywalk will add to the comfort and pleasure of the commuters. The signature skywalk is expected to be complete by March 2010.

Bhobe and Associates have conceptualized the signature “Basket-Handle-Bridge” over Pawna River outside Pimpri-Chinchwad limits and the 1.5-km flyover in Nagpur 's Sitabardy area. They will also conceptualize the ten bridges that will be built over Mithi River .
